S.E.O. & Meta Tags

If you talk to enough "SEO Professionals" (you know, the ones who spam you and cold call you on the phone) you will undoubtedly hear them clamor on about the meta keywords tag. They'll tell you all about how you need to add your most important keywords to this tag, and how it will magically make your site rank higher in the search engines.

Well, wrong.
The meta keywords tag, shown in your HTML code as: <meta name="keywords" content="Every, word, some, fake, seo, can, think, of, to, stuff, on, every, page, of, your, web, site, etc.." /> does not, and has not for a long time, meant much of anything to your search engine rankings.

Some of the "representatives" of these companies who are lucky enough to get me on the phone and receive a free education, are baffled by this. For those of you who do not want to believe it, I have proof in my Meta Keywords Do Not Matter test.

Meta Description

The Meta Description tag is the same as the keywords tag. It has little to no bearing whatsoever on your rankings. But it is a perfect example of why rankings should not be your only concern.

The Meta Description tag, shown in your HTML code as: <meta name="description" content="A well formed description of the PAGE" /> is very important in one respect. This tag is what search engines show your customers as your site description. That description, combined with your title tag, is your all important first impression. They make up the ad that needs to entice them to click through to your web site.
